2 1/2 weeks.

We're 2.5 weeks into the semester and my life is already insane. I've been getting an average of 5.5 hrs of sleep per night. Haha, that looks like more than it feels, trust me.

I've had one shift of clinical in the Medical ICU. It was super interesting. I saw one cardiac arrest. My nurse had just gone to lunch, but I was able to go with the nurse that got the call. There were tons of people in the room. It was Code Blue-cardiac or respiratory arrest.  And luckily they were able to bring him out of it really quick. It was amazing to think that those nurses and doctors could legitimately go home and say they had saved a life that day. People talk about that a lot with the medical profession, but it was so obviously apparent on Saturday. It made me even more grateful that I'm studying nursing.

This semester has been different than any previous semester that I've had. I'm not quite sure what it is, but I think some contributing factors include how chill the teachers are when it comes to administrative issues, but how much they expect of you with the actual knowledge. They aren't as picky on some things, but they haven't babied us nearly as much in explaining assignments to the very tiniest detail. It is making me a little overwhelmed with how much I have to remember from physiology, pathophysiology, med/surg, and pharmacology. I am going to have to do a whole lot of reviewing this semester. If I end up having an extra semester because of a mission or timing with my GE's, I'm definitely going to try to take pathophysiology again. Physiology would also be super nice. Oh how helpful would that be!

And now I have a question:
I've been thinking about this for a good while. Whenever I start to date someone, I feel like I become a worse person. Obviously my schooling suffers because I don't have as much study time. But I also end up getting too little sleep (sleep deprivation that I can't blame on homework makes me feel really guilty), which leads to less effective scripture study and pretty much zero pondering time, less sincere prayers, not as much time spent with my family, less time to fulfill my callings, basically no time to exercise (this is pretty horrid when you're trying to train for a half-marathon), little time to be a good friend and spend time with all the people I would love to hang out with. This always leads to me feeling excessively guilty and overwhelmed because I can't be the person I want to be when I'm in a relationship. I'm not responsible enough. I don't have enough self control. I can't even do it all when I'm totally single, but it just gets 10x worse when I have a boyfriend. And this makes me sometimes feel a tiny bit of frustration at my boyfriend which leads to me being slightly grumpy and not very pleasant.

And so the question:
How can I date someone and still feel like I'm living a balanced life? How can I build a relationship with someone while maintaining my relationship with my other friends and family?

I don't know how.

School and other stuff.

This is the legit new semester post. The one where you write about what school will really be like, not just what you expect or hope. Because you've had a week of it already!

The first week of school is always super emotional for me. This one was no different. I don't know if it is just the overwhelming flood of stress that re enters my life, or the stress of clinicals, or the new people I meet and the stress of being social... Whatever it is, it can get pretty annoying. This last week I had 3 twelve hour days of class.
Monday and Wednesday I have class from 7-7. So I'm on campus more that 12 hours. On these days though, my classes are separated by a few hours of work, which is nice.
Last Tuesday, however, was literally 10 hours of class. Like in-class time. There was a break from 11-12 and then 2:30-3. But other than that I had class from 8-7. And it was all nursing. So. Much. Information. Basically brain overload.
Thursday was psychiatric nursing orientation. It lasted most of the day. 8-2:30.
Friday was ICU nursing orientation up at UofU hospital. It lasted most of the day. 6-2:30.

Clinical orientations are hard for me. Clinicals stress me out a whole bunch. And everywhere we go people say things like, "We just love BYU nursing students. You guys are always more prepared and respectful and overall better students than other programs. We're really excited to work with you." While that's all fine and great for our reputation, it adds a lot of stress to make sure you don't let down that reputation. Also, you are on your feet touring the hospital for most of the day, you do quick computer training for the charting system that they expect you to remember. Riiiiight. But you have to remember. Shoot.

Psych orientation was especially draining. Psychiatric illnesses scare me. Mental illnesses. I don't know why I have always worried that I would develop a mental illness. We learned about the different units. 2 forensic units, one boys unit, and one adult unit that we will be working on. We had to have a voices simulation to simulate what it is like to be psychotic and hear voices. The best word I can think of to describe the voices (or noises) is fiendish. It was awful. Swearing, muttering, hissing, degrading. And then we had to complete tasks quietly, without any questions, during the simulation. It was awful. It made me sick to my stomach. And then we watched a movie that was super emotional. About a woman who has a mental illness but instead of helping, everyone she knows withdraws from her and her two girls. She abuses her children, doesn't take care of herself, can't keep a job, keeps getting arrested... *heavy sigh.

I'm kind of worried about ICU. I hope I don't pass out or get sick. I hope I can do things correctly. I hope I can be prepared. I hope I keep up the reputation previous BYU students have made.

I ended up dropping American Heritage. Again. I just couldn't do 17.5 credits. And work 20 hrs a week. And go to clinicals for 12 hrs a week. And do homework. And have a boyfriend. It just wasn't working out. My 14.5 now seems so much more manageable!

I absolutely love Ballroom and Contemporary dance. I love dance. (I've never said that on this blog before.) And I really love my Marriage and Family class. Hopefully I'll be motivated to do well in my nursing classes too.

In other news:
These past few weeks have reminded me so much of how incredibly awesome my family-extended and immediate-is. I love them so much! Again I've had the thought that until I find someone who I will want to be with more than my family, I'm never getting married. I think it will take me a long time to get to that point. My family is so inspiring and amazing. I love spending time with cousins. :)

I went to Seven Peaks yesterday. That was fun.

I think I'm gonna run the Halloween half marathon in like 7 weeks. Wahoo!

Okay. That's all for today folks! Hopefully next time I'll write a little more interesting post.

Heeerrrre we go!

Once there was a wolf by the name of Al. He was a bid bad bugga with a big bad scowl. His uh, stomach was empty and his eyes were wide and he was lookin' for a pig by the name of Clyde...
That's an awesome song.

But I was actually referring to upcoming/current events in my life. Not that song. But I just wanted to write that anyways.

Here are some things that happened recently:

Monday-had a really neat experience that reminded me of how aware Heavenly Father is of me.
Also-I officially started dating Taylor.
Tuesday-I got my pre mission physical.
Also-Taylor and I drove down to Cedar City to see Les Miserables. Can I just say amazing? I don't even have words.
Wednesday-I worked. some. I looked at my books. I couldn't bring myself to buy them. Went to a self-defense class and pretended that I learned how to beat up guys.
Thursday-Got my TB test read. Looked at my schedule and realized that I had tons of reading to do before school. So I bought my books. Ugh. I hate buying books at the bookstore.
Also-We left down to Manti for our Andelin Family Reunion. It was amazing. I had such a neat experience doing baptisms with my cousins while my Grandpa and Grandma and other cousins and uncles did all of the temple workers jobs except one. It was beautiful.
Friday-Still at the reunion. Slept in super late. Ate waaaay too much food. Had fun conversations. Went swimming. Went to the fair. Drove home.
Saturday-Tried to do some reading. Did my worksheet. Showered. Cleaned. Went on a date with Taylor. Helped Sarah shop and then move. Went to bed way too late.
Sunday-Went to two homecomings. Oh I love when friends get back from missions! Saw some of the most amazing people ever and had just a couple minutes to try to catch up with them all.  Spent time with Taylor. Got a father's blessing for school. Can I just say how much I appreciate the priesthood power? I love that I have a father who honors his priesthood, who is worthy, and who is willing to give me blessings whenever I ask for them.

Tomorrow. Tomorrow. I love ya. Tomorrow.
SCHOOL STARTS TOMORROW! I have a 7 am class. But don't worry, it's a flexibility class. I have been trying to get into that class since I started BYU and finally have the chance. I'm just a teensy bit excited. :) Nursing classes are going to kill me. I can't manage 17 and 1/2 credits plus working 20 hrs a week and having clinicals all day Saturday. What am I thinking? Oh well. I will manage. I may have to drop one (or two) classes but that will be okay. As long as I get enough sleep.

So ttfn! Ta ta for now ;)

Summer

Well my life has not been nearly as exciting as many of those on the blogosphere. I didn't graduate, I haven't had a baby (heck I'm not even dating anyone, let alone married! ;), and I haven't traveled anywhere. But summer was officially here these past few days in Utah (it was up in the 80's yesterday and today) and it is great.

With the warm weather, however, have come many, many memories. The past two summers I was in a pretty serious relationship, so since the summer before I started college I have not had a single summer where I was single. Yes, that has only been two, but it seems quite a while. It is not really sad, and it isn't something that is making my life harder at all. It has just caused me to contemplate. It has made me think of reasons why I should be grateful to be single. I want to spend my summer doing all the things that I still can do being completely unattached to anyone but my very own dear fam :) I want to have the most stress-free summer I've had in years. I have an easy job that pays well, I'm going to school for just one term with classes that shouldn't be too difficult, and I have no other obligations. I have learned so much these past two years and am so grateful for the amazing people that I was able to come to know so well. I hope that life is so very good to them.

Plans for the summer:

  1. Get good grades in my classes
  2. Ride horses at least once a week
  3. Exercise on a consistent basis
  4. Learn to do a round off back hand spring
  5. Go to seven peaks
  6. Get tan for once!
  7. Jump on the tramp
  8. Read lots and lots of books
  9. Earn lots of money
  10. GO TO ALASKA!!!
I know, it's going to be a fabulous summer.

Classes start tomorrow for spring term, and man am I excited! :) I'm taking a dance class and am realizing again (because of my ecstasy) how much I love dancing. I'm taking a self-defense class, so that will be good, and I'm also taking Mission Prep, which I am really looking forward too. Along with those three, I have my two nursing classes--the clinical portion and the class portion. With those classes, though, comes homework. That is why I got on the internet and believe it or not I got distracted. Whoops. So, I'd better go do that. Ttfn!

New Semester: Winter 2012

This semester I get to study these: Labor/Deliver, Mother/Baby, and Pediatrics.

I am so excited! This is where I have always dreamed I would work, where I hope to find what I love most. I start clinicals on Wednesday this week. I start out in Labor/Delivery, so last Wednesday we had a "birth simulation lab." It was so cool! Pregnancy and delivery are such miracles! It blows my mind every time I learn something new about how well the body prepares for and functions during labor. In lab we practiced how to measure how dilated and effaced a woman is. It doesn't seem very accurate, basically you're just guessing. Good thing they don't have student nurses do that in clinical!
We learned about what we need to assess when we care for a pregnant woman:

  • Fetal Heart Rate
  • Vital Signs
  • Dilation and effacement
  • Spotting
  • Position (never flat on her back!)
Questions:
  • Has your water broken?
  • How hard are your contractions?
  • How far apart/close together are they?
  • How is your pain?
Interventions to relieve pain:
  • Re-position
  • Dim lights
  • Relaxing music
  • Massage (I am so excited for this one--I LOVE giving massages!)
  • Walking
  • Baths

I'm sure I'll learn a LOT more when I start studying for reals and when I actually get to see a real live birth.

Questions for any of you who have given birth:
~Would you let a nursing student (a complete stranger) watch your delivery?
~What makes a good labor/delivery nurse?
~What interventions were the best in helping you relax/relieve pain?
~Were there any super annoying things that nurses did that I should know to never do? :)

I'm also in a conducting class, a New Testament class, and History of Creativity 2 (with Jason, my new Bro in law). I think it's going to be a good semester :)

New Beginnings

I'm not really going to do a real new years resolutions post yet, I decided to save that for when I've really been consistent in accomplishing my goals (like maybe in two weeks after they become a "habit"). But I wanted to write some of my thoughts lately. This past year has been hard and extremely emotional.

Winter semester (Jan-April) was rough. It was the first time I'd lived away from home. I still had heartache from breaking up with Matt during finals week the semester before. I was lonely. I was shy. I was scared. My semester in terms of school was extremely difficult. I was so conflicted as to who I was, what my standards were, what I believed. I cried on a consistent basis (probably 5 nights a week). I learned to love running--it was such a stress reliever for me after a long day. I had a  week long "fling" that I really regretted. Basically the stupidest thing I've ever done. I felt very guilty, I never felt good enough. I was still so unsure of where I was going with Matt.

Spring term (April-June) I moved home. I felt like I was beginning to be whole again, beginning to be my old self. I looked forward to the time I would have to learn to enjoy life fully, as a single girl. I was going to get perfect grades this term! ;) Then I decided to meet up with Matt one last time to have better closure on our relationship. Instead we began dating and about three weeks later we were engaged.

Summer term (June-August) was my "it's okay, you're engaged" semester. I had two 3 credit classes and didn't do well in either of them. Being engaged was hard, stressful, and very emotional. That ended in me calling off our wedding during finals, 13 days before the wedding date (I have a knack of doing things at the worst possible times...) and that was the hardest, most painful, most tearful thing I have ever done. I remember waking up on Saturday morning, the day after I gave the ring back to Matt and said goodbye,  and immediately as I remembered the events of the previous evening, the horrible, wrenching sobs began again. August was a painful month.

Fall semester (August-December) found me trying (again) to figure out who I was, what I truly wanted, what I really believed, why I did what I did. I learned a lot of humbling things about myself, so many areas where I was so, so wrong. So many things to work on. It was overwhelming and very discouraging. I had so many fears. People I talked to told me I had OCD. That was rather hard to accept. But life went on, I began to heal, I told myself that all I needed to do was to survive. I had no desire to do anything, no desire to better myself. I just wanted to stop hurting. But I did what I knew I should, only because I knew I should do it. I learned to smile again without faking it, I regained my love for singing, I became closer to my family. I learned so much about the Atonement, about repentance, and realized for the first time in my life that my Savior didn't expect me to be perfect.

Here I am. A new year and a new semester beginning. As I reflected on the miracle, the purpose, of Christmas I realized that I have a lot of work to do. I've become pretty lax in a lot of things because I was so worried about just moving forward that I didn't think much about becoming a better person. And as I've analyzed my desires, my true desires, I've realized that I need to put a lot more effort into the simple things that will help me improve: studying my scriptures, not just reading them, praying "with all the energy of heart" not just mumbling a few words as I crawl out of bed in the morning or fall asleep at night, learning to accept others, to not criticize, to strive to love as Christ loves us, to better honor the Sabbath day, to obey with exactness, to be more humble. I guess I've realized that becoming good, having good desires, being happy takes WORK! And I am going to put in that effort. Because I want to be happy. I want to have good, honest desires. I want to be able to be pure and clean in the sight of my Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Sorry, that was much longer and more personal than I expected. Happy New Years!

It's that time of year again!

School has started. And, once again, I am NOT ready for it. At all. In fact, I'm dreading it. I think it will get better once I get more organized and prepared and once I get into the swing of things. I still haven't bought all my books yet-I just can't bring my self to buy the two most expensive ones...

I wish my books were cute and small, like this (By the way, why are schoolbooks and teachers always associated with apples?):

Instead they are big and heavy and intimidating, like this:

My clinical this semester is up in Sandy at Alta View Hospital. It is going to be great :) We're moving on from CNA jobs to things that actual nurses do. In fact, I have my IV simulation lab tonight. IV's. I'm kinda nervous. It will be good though-I think I will love the fulfillment of helping real, live people feel better, helping their bodies heal, and being an emotional support for them. The only way I can do that, though, is if I know the information and skills thoroughly. That is probably the biggest intimidation factor in nursing-knowing that if you skip on studying or assignments you could be jeopardizing the health of someone else (not to mention all the legal issues that go along with that). So, I'm going to study HARD this semester and try to make it my best one yet, so I can have the confidence needed to be a good nurse.

(Today as I have walked across campus I have been hoping against hope that we'll run in to each other. Maybe one of these days...)
